Hello!

We’ve been so lazy in getting pictures out and there’s only so much you can put in a prayer letter. So here are some pictures of highlights from this past spring semester. Enjoy and thanks for your prayers!

This is not with students but an interesting Spanish tradition. Processions in the street during Easter week. They all passed right by our apartment!

In Portugal with Existe Más Mundo, we helped the Refuge for children by pulling some weeds.

We brought a dancing video game for the kids to play. At first they were shy, but then they really had fun. We all cheered each person on as they danced too!

One of the activities for the kids that our group planned and led was telling stories and acting them out. Here you can see "The Three Little Pigs."

For Pablo's version of "Hansel and Gretel" we got the kids to help act it out.

I realized that giving such a small teaser about my new relationship with Sam in my prayer letter would make some people want more details (I would want to hear more!) So here’s our basic story:

Sam and I met the summer of 2007 on the Camino, but we didn’t really connect until this past July/August, when we were both at the European New Staff Training in Northern Spain that I talked about in a recent prayer letter. Being on the same work team allowed us to get to know each other more and it was during those two weeks that we started liking each other, although neither of us said anything at the time. The last day of the conference he gave me a letter saying how much he enjoyed our friendship and saw the Lord working in and through me. I responded, sharing how his letter was like an answer to prayer for me and how I also enjoyed his friendship.

It was clear that there were also “more-than-friendship” feelings there, so about a week later I went to his family’s house in Southern Spain for the purpose of getting to know each other more and praying about whether the Lord was leading us to a dating relationship or not. From the first day I was there it was clear that God was using us being together for His glory, giving us new opportunities to share Christ with his friends and family who don’t know Jesus. So that week we decided to start dating and see where the Lord would lead from there.

It’s a little hard because he still has one year of university and lives in Granada, which is 5hrs away from Madrid by bus, but God continues to provide and bless us in amazing ways. We appreciate your prayers for us in this time of getting to know one another and seeing if the Lord would lead us toward marriage someday. For everyone who asked me if I would ever marry a Spaniard…

Now a little more about Sam. His major is English Studies, and he speaks English very well (with a British accent!) He will work with Agape next year after graduating. He’s fun, has a heart to serve others, and likes to cook. Thanks for your prayers!!

It was a great experience, and I hope to be able to stay connected with the other camp counselors and the older students throughout the year, until next summer’s camp.

Prayer requests

So, my church here is going through a rough time with physical illnesses and I wanted to pass on the prayer requests to you all. One of the elders named Leandro was diagnosed with colon cancer and has started treatment. Please pray for him and his wife, Pepi, and their family.

There’s also a 20 year old girl named Marta who’s part of the youth group who has a malignant tumor that has to be surgically removed and she’ll start chemotherapy soon too. I’m not sure when the surgery will be, but it’s soon. Please pray for Marta, especially as she wrestles with the “why” God is allowing this to happen. Pray that she’ll see His goodness and sovereignty in the midst of this super difficult situation. Thanks!!

Thanks for your patience with me! I finally feel like I’m settled into my apartment. The next step will be buying a small electric oven and decorating more, but I’m waiting to save up for that stuff. Thanks for praying for God’s provision!!

Visa…check! Airplane ticket…

So, just a quick update that I received notice a few days ago that my visa has been approved and is ready to be picked up!! Praise God!!

All of the things that for the past few months have been unknown and out of my control are one-by-one becoming resolved as God continues to prepare that way for me to go to Madrid. Thanks for your prayers for my visa, which was processed in less than 3 months!!

Please continue to pray for the remaining $600/month that I need. I’m planning on buying a plane ticket within the next week or so on faith that God will provide. It’s amazing to see His provision and His perfect timing.

Existe + mundo

Humanitarian aid is important in Europe, especially among young people who want to make a difference in the world. In order to connect with students through serving others, something Jesus Himself practiced and preached, CCC in Spain has created an organization to give students ways to be involved in fighting social injustice and helping those in need.

In Madrid, we’re still working on getting it off the ground, and we’re hoping to have a big push for it in the spring. Other cities in Spain, namely Barcelona and Málaga, already have both Christian and non-Christian students involved. Please pray that God would use this both to show His love to the needy in Spain, and to bring students face to face with their own need for Christ.

Next Wed. Oct.22, they will have an informational meeting in Málaga. Their specific prayer request is that:

the values and principles that Jesus Himself incarnated would go beyond a simple humanitarian project in the lives of these college students.

So I just did an online search for “Agape Madrid” just to see what would come up, and I found an article about the Campus Crusade for Christ (Agape in Spain) ministries going on in Madrid. Thought you might enjoy reading it and seeing pictures of others that I’ll be loosely working with.

Teamwork in Madrid is the title.

Looking Forward

So, a few days ago I talked with my teammate, Dawn, in Madrid. She’s getting ready to start stuff up for the fall during the next few weeks. Yesterday she was going to meet with the missionaries in Madrid with Mission to the World (MTW), to talk about their plans for being on campus and how we can partner with them. I’ve only met one couple there with MTW, so I’m looking forward to meeting them and working with them when I get there.

I’m also looking forward to reconnecting with the students that I had worked with during my internship years. Email and instant messenger are great tools for keeping in touch, but it’s just not the same as sitting down with someone and discussing life over a cup of café con leche.

A few nights ago, I met a couple who had worked with YWAM in Madrid for almost 20 years back in the 70s and 80s. They reminded me that God hasn’t forgotten about Spain and that He’s still working there. It’s true, and I can’t wait to get back and be part of His plan for Spain!

Visa update

Thank you for praying for my appointment with the Spanish consulate last week. I did have a little trouble with my proof of insurance papers, but finally they accepted my application. However, it could take up to 3-6 months to process. I don’t know how God will work out the timing of everything (I’m still at 76% of my financial goal), but I know He’s going to work it all out.
